Sweet peas are a climbing plant that blooms in clusters in a variety of colors that include red, pink, blue, white and lavender. They bloom in early summer and have a long blooming season. They make excellent cut flowers. Sweet pea flowers resemble butterflies and the stems are sturdy enough to support them.
The old-fashioned varieties were selected for their colors and intense fragrance, but many of the modern plants have lost their fragrance. They are available in every color except yellow.
They do best in full sun, but in hot weather partial shade will be fine. The mature size will vary on the variety but the vines will usually be 6 to 8 feet in length. Sweet pea will bloom in late spring or early summer. They bloom best is you cut the flowers as they bloom making them great for bouquets on the table. The heat of summer will diminish the blooming.
